Most Common Questions:

Can Check Free quarantee 100% Electronic?

CheckFree cannot guarantee 100% electronic.  The way the payment is remitted depends on the merchant, the customer's payment history, recent activity, and the amount of the payment.  In some cases, the merchant is not set up electronically.  Keep in mind, that whether CheckFree sends the payment electronically or by paper payment, their goal is to deliver the payment to the merchant on the due date.  So, if CheckFree does send a paper payment, they allow 1-3 days in the mail.

How does CheckFree process payments?

In an effort to maintain efficiency with regard to customer payments and the relationships CheckFree has with the various Merchant/Payees, CheckFree can process payments one of three ways:

  • An Electronic Payment - When this payment method is used, funds are deducted from your account on the due date you request in your payment instructions.  If the Merchant/Payee has signed up to receive payments electronically, the payment may be credited electronically to the merchant one business day prior to the due date, so that the Merchant/Payee may post it to your account the next business day.
  • A Corporate Check - When this payment method is used, funds are deducted from your account on the due date you requested in your payment instructions.  This is a check sent via U.S. Mail and drawn on the CheckFree processing center's corporate account three business days prior to the due date.  The Merchant/Payee may post the payment earlier than the due date if the check arrives early, the same day as the due date, or very shortly thereafter.  Funds will never be deducted from your account earlier that the due date you requested in your payment instructions.
  • A Laser Draft - is a check drawn directly from your account and mailed to the Merchant/Payee.  When this payment method is used, funds are deducted from your account when the Merchant/Payee presents the check for payment, just as if the check had been written by you.  The draft is mailed 1-3 days before the due date.

Why did my payment process electronically last month, and as a paper draft this month?

Each payment request is evaluated individually and may change each time a payment is processed.  That's why, in some cases, payments made by the same customer to the same merchant may result in different payment methods.  A payment may switch from one payment method to another for a number of reasons:

  • The merchant may have temporarily switched the payment method to paper, while they update processing information.
  • Recent changes or re-issuance of your payee account number could alter the payment method.
  • The amount of the payment and your payment history are also considered.
  • A high number or a high dollar amount of payments within a certain period of time may cause the payment method to switch.
  • Any recent payments that have been returned by your Bank could affect CheckFree's decision.

There are many factors that are evaluated when making the payment method decision.  However, keep in mind, that whether CheckFree sends the payment electronically or they send a paper payment, their goal is to deliver the payment to the merchant on the due date.  So, if CheckFee does send a draft, they allow 1-3 days in the mail.
